How Do Makerspaces Structure Equipment Training and Access?
Training is the operating system of a makerspace
Every functioning makerspace answers the same organizational question: who is allowed to use which machine, and how do they earn that access? The answer is a training-and-authorization program, and it's worth understanding whether you're joining a space (so you know what to expect) or planning one (so you know what to build). This page describes how these programs are typically structured. It is not itself safety training — for that, take the hands-on instruction your space provides.
The tiered-access model
Most institutional spaces sort their equipment into tiers and gate each tier behind training. A concrete published example is Binghamton University's makerspace safety program, an institutional plan written by a university environmental health and safety office. Programs like it typically combine several elements:
- General orientation before any access at all — the layout, emergency equipment locations, and the house rules.
- Equipment-specific authorization — a machine is off-limits until you've completed its training, usually a demonstration plus supervised use, recorded by the space.
- Supervision requirements that vary by tier — some machines may be used alone, others only during staffed hours or with a buddy present.
- Documentation — spaces keep records of who is authorized on what, which is also what makes the program auditable by the institution.

Why even "easy" machines get formal treatment

If you're building a program
Don't write your training program from scratch. Three shortcuts:

- Involve professionals for the technical judgments. Ventilation design, electrical work, and fire-code questions belong to licensed professionals and your local officials, not to a template.
